Catch It: The Book: Off the Beaten (Subway) Track

The other day, I tried to make a Key Lime Pie. It was a disaster, and afterwards, I thought, “Why don’t you pick up a homemade pie from Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies—you read it in Off the Beaten (Subway) Track by Suzanne Reisman. While reading the book again, I remembered what I liked most: Ms. Reisman’s short stories of a tall and wide place, New York City—that is ever changing; that has neighborhoods of a country-inn; and a one-way fare that can take you anywhere for $2.25.

Ms. Reisman is a travel writer, and in Off the Beaten (Subway) Track she categorized everything one needs to know to personalize an adventure by: Art and Architecture, Eating, Ethnic, Factory Tour, Fort, Hall of Fame, Historic, Home-based, Libraries, Money, Music, Nautical, New York City-related, Oddities, Outdoor/Nature, Religious/Spiritual, Science and Technology, Shrine, Shopping, Sports, Store-based, Toys, and World’s Largest/Tallest.

Off the Beaten (Subway) Track is designed to help people find the unusual and quirky sites in New York City that even many lifelong New Yorkers don’t know about,” she writes, “I love road trips, strange museums, and eccentric people who share their unusual talents, passions, and obsessions with the general public.”

What is lovely about walking in New York City is one comes across the Corner Shop Café—a quaint café at 643 Broadway & Bleecker Street, New York 10012. It is a popular brunch place in Greenwich Village; a poetic atmosphere to enjoy a pleasing meal.

Every day, tourists and locals can savor the American Cuisine at Corner Shop Café. Such as, Cornershop Cobb Salad with Chipotle Dressing; Rigatoni Napolitano; Grilled Salmon Nicoise; Yellowfin Tuna Burger with Wasabi Aioli, and a 8 oz. Ale Naturale Grass Fed Beef Burger.

Catch It: Fairway Café & Steakhouse

When one thinks of organic, I am reminded of a definition from the “USDA: National Organic Program: Organic is a labeling term that indicates that the food or other agricultural product has been produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering may not be used.”

And so, when I think of eating fresh and natural ingredients, Fairway Café & Steakhouse is an ideal restaurant. Fairway Market, Café and Steakhouse is located at 2127 Broadway, New York, NY 10023.

On Tuesday, March 20th, I had dinner at Fairway Steakhouse. The restaurant is nestled above their supermarket and overlooks Manhattan’s Upper West Side. At 7:00 PM, I was greeted by the manager, Kayshwar Mohan and the renowned chef Mitchel London. In the book, The Food Life: Inside The World of Food with Grocer Extraordinaire at Fairway by Steven Jenkins and Mitchel London, I read of Mr. London: “He was Mayor Koch’s official chef at Gracie Mansion for seven years and the coauthor of The Mitchel London Gracie Mansion Cookbook. Mr. London—indeed shapes the style and natural ease at Fairway Café & Steakhouse.

In a moment, I was escorted to my table where yellow Daffodils and a white candle awaited me. I stared at the tall and wide windows, and thought, “I am in Fairway Market, but I don’t feel like I am.”

The waitress greeted me. “Hi, I’m Vivian, have you had a chance to look at the menu?”

“Yes, Hi, I was looking at the Prefix Menu (for $24.00),” I said. “I think I will start with a glass of red wine, the Fantinel Celebrate Life Merlot (Italy 2007).

“Great,” she said. “I will be right back.”

While I waited, I momentarily glanced at the family sitting on my left. The lady saw my smile. “Oh, that looks delicious,” I said.

“It is,” she said. “We order the Boston Lettuce with Camembert for our appetizer every week. It’s wonderful.”

I returned to my menu, and Vivian arrived with the wine.

“Have you decided what you would like to order?” she asked.

“Yes, I’ll start with the Roasted Potato Leek Soup; and for the main course, the Half Murray’s Ale Natural Roast Chicken (with roasted carrots and fingerling potatoes).”

“Great,” Vivian said. “What about dessert?”

The Warm Rustic Apple Tart (with vanilla ice cream) sounds divine.” I said.

“I’ll be right back,” she said.

I sipped my wine. The gentleman on my right, said. “Good choice—last week, my friend and I had the Grilled Prime Hanger; and tonight, I’m having the Roasted Branzino.”

“That sounds so good,” I said.

“Yea,” the gregarious gentleman, said. “I come every week to Fairway Steakhouse before I go to the Beacon Theater.”

“Beacon Theater,” I said. “Yes, it’s across the street.”

“Yea, my friend and I usually come here for dinner—it’s our neighborhood place.”

A minute passed, Vivian brought over my Roasted Potato Leek Soup. Each spoonful was heavenly; I could have had another bowl. I sipped my tasty Merlot; watched their movie on the flat screen television: Exodus, starring Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint.

Then entered—Vivian with my main course: Half Murray’s Ale Natural Roast Chicken. It was succulent supreme.

By the time dessert was served: The Warm Rustic Apple Tart with vanilla ice cream—I kept thinking of the manager’s words.  “Everything at Fairway Café & Steakhouse is fresh and organic. You can’t believe you are on top of a supermarket.”

After dessert, the only word I could utter was Extraordinary.”

Catch It: Sezz Medi′: Pizzeria Napoletana, Ristorante & Café

A week ago, my girlfriend Tashna and her two beautiful girls: Lelia, four-years-old and Nina, two-years-old and I went for an early dinner at Sezz Medi′. The restaurant is located at 1260 Amsterdam Avenue (corner of 122nd Street) New York, NY 10027.

At 5:00 PM, Mom drove the family car; the girls sat in the back-seat. Lelia and Nina smiled as I sang made up children melodies in the car. Fifteen minutes later, Lelia said, “Pizza, Pizza,” as we entered Sezz Medi′.

We were escorted to our tables by the host, Tanieka who gave us our menus, although we already knew what we were going to order. Lelia said again, “Pizza.” Mom ordered for the girls to share, the brick oven Marínara Pizza (tomato, oregano, sliced garlic and basil, cost $9.00); Tashna and I shared the classic Margheríta Pizza (tomato, mozzarella, and basil, cost $12.00).

While the girls relished their pizza, drew pictures on the paper table cloths, and competed for crayons. Tashna and I were deciding what to have later for dessert.

Then suddenly, dessert was decided. Lelia and Nina were to share Tiramisu; Tashna and I ordered chocolate cake and cappuccino. A minute passed, dessert was at the table—one word was spoken over and over: “Yummy…Yummy.”

Before long, Lelia said, “Mommy-home.” The kids were tired, we gathered our coats and braced for the cold weather outside.

Inside the car, I said. “Thanks Tashna, I loved our Mediterranean adventure.”

“You’re welcome,” she said. “The girls love seeing Auntie Wanda.”

“Ahhh…they are the cutest,” I said. “What did you like most about Sezz Medi′?”

“I liked the service, and the pizza was so fresh,” Tashna said. “The ambiance and food was top notch. It was cozy for my family because the girls could color while we talked so it’s family friendly.”

CATCH IT: Laughing Man Market Place

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, he wrote, “Not all those who wander are lost.” On Tuesday, February 28th, the morning weather was warm for winter. I had a meeting down town on Broadway to discuss a new project. Afterwards, I decided to stop by Barnes & Noble, but first, I had a desire for coffee.

Suddenly, I saw an aesthetic, clean style, compact cafe—Laughing Man Market Place. It is located in Lower Manhattan, Tribeca neighborhood at 184 Duane Street, New York, NY 10013. Immediately, two bright smiles said hello, Michelle (Sales Associate) and Queenie (Head Barista). My curious eyes circled about the Laughing Man Market Place and consumed the rich aroma of their coffee. I ordered a regular Home Blend coffee; and glanced at some of their gift accessories for sale, such as: Espresso (Indonesian and Ethiopian Blend); Green Tea: Jasmine Pearls; Chocolate: Boxes and Hot Chocolate; and other gifts: Home Sweet Blend (1 Bag of 184 Home Blend and 1 Bag of Dukale’s Dream Espresso).

I found out that the actor Hugh Jackman, Barry Steingard and David Steingard are co-owners and their world mission is to make people happy. Their website explains it succinctly, “It’s not about us, it’s about ALL BE HAPPY! It’s about education being the key to overcoming obstacles. It’s about being conscious of what we do and how we do it. It’s about discovering everyday what we don’t know and doing better the next time. It’s being passionate about “ALL BE HAPPY” and finding ways to make it a reality.”

After, I said good bye to Michelle and Queenie, I walked one block; took pleasure in my full-bodied, rich coffee, and wished I had ordered a large cup. Then, I thought of the words from Confucius, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” The Laughing Man Coffee and Tea’s big idea enriches the world with “ALL BE HAPPY.” And Happy—I was with my Home Blend Coffee.

CATCH IT: Nizza Restaurant: Hell’s Kitchen

My cousin Cecil, sharp and smart from Savannah, Georgia telephoned me in January, and said, “Hey, Elizabeth and I are flying in to New York City on Thursday, February 9th for dinner and a Broadway Show. Could you pick a restaurant, and would you be our guest for dinner? And Wanda, could you choose a restaurant closer to The Majestic Theater? I am taking Elizabeth to see The Phantom of the Opera for our 10th Wedding Anniversary.”

“Oh, how nice,” I said.

“Hey,” he said. “Don’t forget, we like Italian.”

“Italian,” I thought. “Today is Friday and I wish I were visiting my friends at their home…anticipating homemade “Italian” pizza. Lisa and Chris who live in North Carolina have two boys: Cross and Luke and their Dad makes Mediterranean Pizza on Fridays. Lisa, said, ‘“sometimes our neighbors come over—so what began in New Jersey is now a North Carolinian tradition.”’

And yet, evening meals at Nizza Restaurant could become a tradition. It is located in Midtown West Manhattan; in the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen at 630 9th Avenue, New York, NY 10026 (between 44th Street and 45th Street). Nizza’s small tables, savoir fair bar and saucy menu connects home style to the life style of New York City.

Thirty days later, Thursday came at Nizza. Cousin Cecil ordered the Veal Scallopine (shiitake mushrooms and tomatoes in marsala wine sauce with sautéed broccoli rabe); Elizabeth ordered the Grilled Salmon (roasted eggplant puree, farro salad, grilled asparagus, paprika and basil oils); and I ordered the Napoletana Pizza (tomato, cherry tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella and basil). The cost of meals ranged from $14.50 to $18.75.

For, dessert, we all ordered the succulent Espresso Parfait. Cousin Cecil quickly finished his while his dark brown eyes stared at his wife’s. Elizabeth, said, “Wanda, we could never live in New York City—my husband would have us eating at Nizza almost every day.”

Catch It: Lolita Bar on Broome Street

It is nothing like having good friendships. The delight of becoming friends with the entire family and the fellowships that grow in years are golden.

On a wintry January evening, I was invited to attend my friends, Benita and Curtis’s daughter Taylor’s 22nd birthday party. The celebration was at Lolita Bar at 266 Broome Street, New York, NY 10002.

As soon as I walked on Broome Street in Lower Manhattan, I thought of a recent photography exhibit of Berenice Abbott at the Science, Industry and Business Library (188 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10016). The exhibit: “Berenice Abbott’s Changing New York,” are black and white images of the city from 1935 to 1938.

Lolita Bar is located in an area that is reminiscence to the old-fashioned New York that is the fashionable—New York City today.

While Taylor’s beauty and bright smile dazzled the “cool” bar, her elegant parents mingled with their daughter’s friends and colleagues. I conversed with her guests; enjoyed a genuine “Brooklyn Lager” beer; and walked through the art work on the exposed brick walls such as: “See Me, See You,” oil on wood and “Amazon Queen,” oil on canvas.

Sometime later, we said good night to Taylor. “Thanks for coming Wanda.” She said, and I gave her a huge hug.  Her proud parents stared at their enchanting daughter.

“See you guys this weekend.” She said; grinned and good bye kisses landed on her cheeks.

Lolita Bar is a trendy lounge, in a trendy neighborhood—SoHo. It blends beautifully with the international low-key crowd of the historical Lower East Side community.

Catch It: Dinosaur Bar-B-Que

While growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, week-end barbecues were a family tradition. Many years later when I moved to New York City, I would wait until I visited my Mom’s home for a barbeque—treat.

On Saturday, January 7th, I came upon Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, in Manhattanville at 700 West 125th Street, New York, NY 10027.

Although, I had heard of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, I could not imagine any meat being roasted on the grill better than my Mom’s backyard. One time, while my brother Sherrod was basting chicken with his secret barbecue sauce, my sister Lynette, a school teacher said. “You know, the origin of barbecue is French.”

“Oh, really,” I replied.

“Yes,” she said, “barbe to queue.”

That conversation seemed ages ago; but when I saw two women sitting in nippy weather, with a platter of barbecue ribs, I decided to take quick look at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.

It was 4:00 PM, and I thought, “There is plenty of time for my Cherry Walk. (“Cherry Walk is part of Riverside Walk, a continuous four-mile-long path along the Hudson River from 72nd to 158th Street”). I gazed at the majestic view of the Hudson River and walked in Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.

The space was large, plenty of tables for dining and a sports bar area with additional seating. Right away, one takes in a wide and welcoming sight: the open kitchen and the smell of smoky barbeque. At the reception desk, there were two friendly hosts; many customers flowed in; families with children in carriages; and couples or a single person with a book in hand—waited to be seated. It was crowded—a lot of cheer throughout the home of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.

At the same time, the reception desk was busy; another gentleman walked over to greet me.

“Hi,” he said. “Are you waiting for a table?”

“No, I am stopping by; this is my first time at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.” I said.

“We like first timers; I am Stephen, the Floor Manager.” He said.

“My name is Wanda, I have a blog called Catch It. I write about restaurants and delightful places in New York; delectable eateries, such as a Dinosaur Bar-B-Que,” I said.

“Great, let me get Abigail, she could tell you more.” He said.

A few moments later, a lady with a gracious smile said, “Hi, I am Abigail Doyle; I heard you are a first timer?”

“Yes, Hi, I feel I am down south; the smoky smell of barbecue; the homelike atmosphere—It’s a dream.” I said.

“We have other locations, too,” Abigail said, “in Syracuse, Rochester and Troy, New York.”

“That’s great, I will certainly come again.” I said.

We spoke for another minute, and I thanked Abigail and Stephen for my surprised treat.

I was glad the daylight lays still; I had time for my walk. I saw the same two comfy ladies, sitting outside, and enjoying their Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.

As I strolled towards Cherry Walk (St. Clair Place and Marginal Street/125th Street), I looked at the gorgeous blue sky; the shimmering sun shone on the calm waters of the Hudson River.  By the time, I reached West 79th Street and Riverside Drive: runners, bikers speeded north.

I thought, “Perhaps they are on their way for some southern style, home style—Dinosaur’s international style Bar-B-Que.
